Alta Lorraine Paskett Garrett passed away on Sunday, January 8th, 2012 surrounded by her sweet husband, Ralph, all her children, and other family and friends. Alta was born in Henefer, Utah, August 29th, 1928 to Edgar Percy Paskett and Anna Gallacher Paskett. Alta grew up on a turkey farm in the house that her Grandpa, John Albert Paskett, built. Her father lost his eyesight when she was 4 years old. She became one of his main helpers raising the baby turkeys in the brooder. She was always a hard worker, remaining strong throughout her life.
Alta met her best friend and eternal sweetheart, Ralph Wendell Garrett, at East High School where he fell in love with her "beautiful blue eyes." They were married September 28th, 1945 at 5:08pm in Alhambra, California, while Ralph was serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple June 22nd, 1947.
They have been happily married 66 years, 3 months, and 10 days. "I love you, a bushel and a peck" was their theme song. They raised their five children in the Cottonwood area on 2300 East. Ralph and Alta moved to Alpine in 1977 where they spent their time loving grandchildren, serving in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and planting hundreds of trees. They truly made the "desert blossom as a rose".
Alta was a loving, caring mother. Her life was dedicated to teaching her children compassion, love, tolerance, forgiveness, and service. She always put other's needs before her own. She was always encouraging, giving, and charitable. She was a champion of those in need, often "adopting" others into the family. Because of her great love, we feel that countless others have become part of the Garrett family. There was always hard work, laughter, and amazing home cooked goodness from Mom's kitchen when the whole family got together.
She is loved and will be missed by her 26 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren, who enjoyed talking with her because she always had wonderful encouragement, advice, and stories. They learned many tender lessons of life at her feet. "She made each of us feel that we were her favorite." She truly loved others unconditionally. It was said that "Nobody can make a peanut butter and honey sandwich like Grandma!"
Mom was a true disciple and follower of Jesus Christ. She was a beloved Primary Teacher, spending many years preparing the 7-8 year old children for baptism. She served in the Young Women Program. She and her sweetheart served in the Washington Spokane Mission from 1992-1993. She worked in the Provo Temple from 1987-1996 and then in the Timpanogos Temple from 1996-2006. She was truly an example to all.
Our mother had many talents. She was a gifted gardener, philosopher, and poet. She created beautiful oil paintings, and always expressed gratitude for the beauties of nature. We would like to express sincere gratitude to Hearts for Hospice for their tender, loving care to our mother for the last 3 years. They are our true friends. Mom had the best caretakers -- number one being our father!
She is proceeded in death by her parents, brother: Keith Paskett, daughter-in-law: Lisa Clark Garrett, grandson: Aaron Garrett, and two great grandchildren. She is survived by her eternal companion: Ralph Wendell Garrett, brothers: Ray Edgar (Ann) Paskett and John Albert (Elaine) Paskett, children: Reg(Colleen) Garrett, Alpine, Utah; Ray (Milli) Garrett, Alpine, Utah; David (Coy) Garrett, Sandy, Utah; Debi (Mike) Phillips, Alpine, Utah; Denece (John) Jones, American Fork, Utah; Carmen (Vernon) Lujan, Espanola, New Mexico, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 12th at 11:00am at the Fort Canyon LDS Chapel (890 N. Heritage Hills Drive, Alpine, Utah 84004). Friends are welcome to call Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00pm or Thursday morning from 9:00-10:30am prior to the services at the aforementioned LDS chapel. Internment at the Alpine City Cemetery following the funeral services.
The family wishes that in lieu of flowers please donate to the LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund.
We are a family forever, for always, no matter what.
