Ardella Christensen Spong, age 69, died of cancer in the Provo Hospital on April 4, 2007. She was born in her parent's home in the small farm town of Oak City, UT on December 29, 1937. She went to Oak City Elementary and then 14 miles away by bus to Delta High School, graduating in June 1956.
She received Individual Achievement Awards for each of her 5 years in MIA. Her Seminary Graduation was in 1952. She received a Silver Gleaner Award in 1956. She was awarded a 4H Club Scholarship from UPRR in 1956, but she had to leave the family farm and go to work in Salt Lake City.
While she was serving as a Stake Missionary, she worked as a seamstress at Osborne Apparel Co in Salt Lake City, Utah. She met her husband at an LDS dance in Dec 1957, when she was only 19, he 21. They were married in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple on Jan 9, 1959. She was a wonderful wife.
She went with her husband to Palo Alto California, and lived in various placesa"Utica, Ithaca, Syracuse, Liverpool all in upstate New York with her husband while he was on a 3-year training program with GE. They had a permanent home in Liverpool New York from 1961- 2000, and during that time they lived in Florida for a year and North Dakota for 2 years. They moved to Mapleton, Utah in early 2000 when her husband retired. Ardella has been on long vacations with her husband in Italy, Greece, France, Germany, England, Portugal, and Hawaii.
Her main interests were centered on her LDS Church work: Primary teacher, Young Women's President, Young Marrieds Leader, Relief Society President, Compassionate Service Leader, Visiting Teacher Coordinator, Chocolate Easter Egg fund-raiser project.
Ardella has two children, Michael (Amy) Spong and Mrs. Sheri (Lee) Smith, and 10 grandchildren (4 girls, 6 boys), including identical twins. Both of her children have strong temple marriages. Ardella is the youngest child of Willard R Christensen and Genevieve Wright Christensen. Her 3 brothers and 2 sisters are living. Brothers are Richard, Blaine, and Grover Christensen. Her sisters are Mrs. Roma Henrie and Mrs. Hazel Humphreys.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 9, 2007 at 11:00am at the Mapleton North Stake Center, 475 North Highway 89, Mapleton, Utah. There will be a viewing the day before at 6:00 - 8:00pm at the same location and at 10:00am before the funeral. Interment will be at the Oak City Cemetery in her childhood home town.
