Audrey Caire Sprung

A powerful life force has left us.
Audrey Sprung - wife, mother, athlete, actress - passed away at her home in Park City, Utah in the company of her family and close friends. Audrey lived a full and vibrant life on her own terms, making a lasting impact on all who knew her. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Audrey make a contribution to their favorite charity in her name.
She was born Audrey Caire, daughter of Arthur Anthony Caire Jr. and Louise Fabacher Caire, in New Orleans, Louisiana on the third of November, 1927. One of 8 children, she became a National AAU swimming champion at age 17 and garnered dozens of medals as a young athlete. Audrey graduated from Holy Name of Jesus High School in New Orleans at age sixteen and earned a degree in education from Louisiana State University. While at LSU she became the first woman to be named outstanding Southern AAU athlete. She was a nationally ranked swimmer and tennis player. She had a successful career as a model in New York and Los Angeles, where she was a contract player at 20th Century Fox. She returned to New York to continue her acting career in television and films, most notably starring in the movie "Joe" with Peter Boyle and Susan Sarandon. She was an avid sportswoman throughout her life - an accomplished skier, swimmer, golfer, tennis player, horsewoman and dog trainer.
Audrey and Arnold Sprung moved from New York to Park City in 1992. She devoted her final years to training and showing her horses and her dogs, continuing to win honors. She was a gracious hostess who opened her home to family and friends from all over the world. In Park City, among her papers, her children found a poem she loved, verses that sum up her indefatigable attitude toward life:
Don't stand by my grave and weep
For I'm not there, I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamonds glint on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn's rain
When you awaken in morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circle flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there, I did not die.

Audrey is survived by her husband, Arnold Sprung of Park City; her daughters Louise Clark Goddard of Washington D.C, Doran Clark Abrams of Los Angeles and D'Wayne Clark Waterman of Bethel, Connecticut; her sons Thomas Sprung of Evergreen, Colorado and John Sprung of East Dover, Vermont; her eleven grand-children and one great-grandchild; her dogs, her horses and a multitude of friends.
We will always remember you, Audrey.
