Barton Melvin Smith, 80, of Salt Lake City, passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family. Bart was born on June 15, 1929 in Franklin County Ohio to Annajo Barton and Weldon H Smith. He was raised and educated in Ohio and graduated from Shelby High School in 1947 and later attended Norwich Military University. Bart married Nancy Ellen Dauch on March 28, 1953 and together they had four children. He joined the 51st Army Band in February 1948 and served in Korea in 1951 with the 7th Cavalry. After Bart was honorably discharged from the Army he worked in law enforcement in Ohio and California before moving to SLC in 1966 to open an IHOP and later worked for Foodservice as a manager for Northrup Corp. in Saudi Arabia until he retired. Bart was a volunteer teacher at Highland High School in the wood shop. He loved woodworking and was a member of the DAV Honor Guard. Bart is survived by his wife, Nancy Smith, SLC, UT; children, Savon "Bud" (Cheri) Smith, Idaho Falls, ID; Laura (Michael) Ochinero, Murray, UT; Brenda (Jerry) Hill, Bountiful, UT; and Keith (Martha) Smith, Livingston, MT; 4 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and sister, Judy Thomas, Shelby, OH. Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the Centenary United Methodist Church, 1740 South 500 East, SLC. The family would like to give a special thanks to Hospice for there loving care given to Bart. In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the DAV Honor Guard, 273 E. 800 S. SLC, UT 84111or to the Shelby High School (Ohio) Class of, 1947 Trust, PO Box 1 Shelby, Ohio 44875, or an organization of your choice.
