Our lovely mother, Catherine, also know as Kay or Dolly, passed away on Monday, May 7, 2007 of pancreatic cancer.
She was born on October 15, 1923 in Salt Lake City. She was the daughter of Peter W. and Nellie Sieverts Neerings. She grew up in Salt Lake and graduated from Granite High School. After serving a full time mission in California, she married Alonzo David Welchman in the Salt Lake Temple on Sept. 12, 1949. Twenty-two months after they were married, Alonzo, or Lon, contracted polio. Mother remained true and faithful to her husband and temple marriage for the 36 years that our father lived as a quadriplegic polio patient. He was transferred to a VA hospital in CA.. Mother remained in CA working as a secretary at the Los Angeles Temple and the Visitor's Center until a few years after father's death.
Two daughters were born, Robin Alona and Jodee. Mom kept busy sewing clothes for her two daughters as well as working full time and visiting dad at the hospital on weekends. She opened her heart and home to anyone she met at the Visitor's Center, from new converts to English nannies. She was always supportive as daddy exercised his role as father from his iron lung.
Mother is survived by many who knew and loved her including her two daughters, Robin (Raymond) Gumbrecht and Jodee (Gary) Matsuda, eight grandchildren: Jarom, Elisa, Ammon, Laurel, Erik, Kirsten, Shurna, and Kylie and nine great grandchildren. She had a special relationship with two great granddaughters, Nikelle and Kali Limon.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 11 at the Manila 10th Ward, 3785 W. Box Elder Dr., Cedar Hills at 11:00am with a viewing one hour prior at the same location. Burial will be at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E 1300 S. in SLC. Online condolences may be given at www.serenicare.com.
We give special thanks to Candice, Leeann and Marsha at Comfort Care Hospice for their kind and loving service to our mother.
