Laytona€"Charles Dawson, our beloved father, passed away on March 5, 2010. He was born on June 6, 1919 in County Durham, England. He was the son of George H. and Edith Dawson. Charles grew up in Clinton, Iowa, his family having moved there when he was two. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1937. He received a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Monmouth College (Ill.) in 1942. He retired as Executive Vice-President of Linwood Stone Products Company of Davenport, Iowa in 1985 after many years with the company. On July 17, 1943 Charles married Bernice Irene "Bunny" Dawson in Fremont, Nebraska. They greatly enjoyed their 58 years together. Three sons were born to them: Terrence William, Stephen David, and Stanley Byron. Charles served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-47. He and Bunny lived in Honolulu with Terry for most of his service in the Navy. He had met Bunny in Fremont, Nebraska and they both worked at a munitions plant before his military career began. At college Charles was the conference champion in the Midwest Conference for all three years of varsity golf. He was inducted into the Monmouth College Athletic Hall of Fame and is the only golfer to be so honored at that school. Charles and Bunny were long-time members of Short Hills C.C. in East Moline, Illinois. Before leaving the Quad City area in 1982 they belonged to Crow Valley C.C. in Davenport, Iowa. They played golf and bowled for many years. Charles was a scratch golfer most of his golfing career and scored two of his three holes-in-one in his mid-sixties. Charles and Bunny moved to Woodstock, Georgia in 1982. They became members of the Hill- side United Methodist Church in Woodstock. They were dedicated attendees at the Fellowship classes and developed many very meaningful friendships with members of that group. It was a highlight of the later years of both their lives. Charles especially derived great joy from volunteering at Muss Ministries with other members of the church. He is survived by his sons and their wives: Terry and Lee, Steve and Mary Ann, Stan and Mary. He is also survived by grandchildren: Charles Ray Dawson and his wife Karen; Kristine Kukue' Dawson; Amalia Sue Deasey and her husband Justin; Whitney Dawson; Jeffrey Malcolm Dawson and his wife Katherine; Christopher David Dawson; and Gregory Charles Dawson. Finally, he is survived by two great-grandchildren: Ryan Malcolm Doyle Dawson and Harper Deasey. Charles was predeceased by his wife Bunny and his brothers, Harold and Brian and sister Shirley. The family wishes to express thanks to Hospice and especially David, Dave and Dannielle at Rocky Mountain Care for their devoted care for Charles. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 27 at 11:00 A.M. at the Hillside United Methodist Church a t4474 Towne Lake Parkway in Woodstock, Georgia . Charles and Bunny's remains will be placed at the Veteran 's Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
