Charles Dennis Layton, of Livingston, TX, and Washington, UT, returned to his Heavenly Father on September 30, 2012, after a long battle with Cancer. Charlie was born June 17, 1948 in Engelberg, AR, to James Dennis ( J.D.) and Myrtle Irene Davis Layton.
Charlie was raised with 2 brothers in Engelberg, AR on his family's farm, where he learned the value of hard work. After graduating from high school, he attended an Auto, diesel and welding school in Nashville, TN, and worked in a shipping yard as a mechanic. He married, raised 2 boys, ran a tire store in Blanchard, TX and for 6 yrs. served in the National Guard. Charlie's love of travel led him to Pipelining for over 26 years, starting as a laborer, operator and working his way up to Coating foreman.
Charlie loved noodling for Catfish and gigging frogs, he enjoyed cooking for family and friends, especially Catfish, hush puppies, and pancakes. He loved Nascar, gardening, and making wood toys. Charlie took a special interest in helping some of his young pipeliner friends, reaching out to and encouraging them. He never judged people, just accepted them for who they were. He was affectionately known as King Charlie or Whiskers to his fellow pipeliners, and considered them 'family'.
Charlie and his sweetheart Debbie were married in Daton, Texas in 1992. They traveled the pipeline circuit for 20 years, making new friends and raising Charlene and Dennis. Debbie and the kids settled back into to their Utah home, joining Charlie during summer breaks and most holidays until he became ill in November of 2011. He fought a valiant battle and leaves behind many heartbroken family and friends. He will be sorely missed by all.
