Charles Young Warner was born in Pocatello, Idaho, 4 September 1934 to Charles Arthur Warner and Carmen Isobel Halford, and grew up in nearby Aberdeen, where he graduated from High School in 1952. He was married to Patsy Evelyn Hill in 1954. They had 6 children. They were divorced in 1988 and he married Karin Anthony Palmer in 1990. He helped raise her five children.
Chuck served in the US Air Force as he began his formal education, graduated with a BES in Mechanical Engineering in 1957, then went on to earn an MS degree from BYU and a PhD from The University of Michigan in 1966. He returned to BYU as Professor in 1966 and began a research career in auto crash safety. He remained an avid and skilled pilot throughout his life.
Chuck served for two years with the USDOT in Washington, DC. He founded a company in research and consulting in the field of crashworthiness, Collision Safety Engineering. He published over 100 technical articles and papers, the last of which was presented in Detroit in 2008. He earned the honor and respect of colleagues in a variety of automotive safety organizations worldwide. He inspired hard work and a hands-on approach to challenges, and to life, and was equally proud of his abilities as an auto mechanic and a professor of engineering. He was an inventor of many useful methods and mechanisms, and never tired of striving for improvement.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served as Bishop in the Provo, Utah Edgemont Ward from 1967 to 1971. He also worked in scouting programs and numerous teaching positions over the years.
Chuck passed away at home 8 November 2008. He is survived by his wife, Karin, her children Angie Ortega, Willy Palmer, Ryan Palmer, Stefanie Stocks and Jeff Palmer. Also Patsy Warner, and children Ralph Warner, Shelly Adams, Leslie Cantrell, Mark Warner, Eric Warner, Chad Warner. Nineteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the LDS chapel 1071 West 600 South, Orem, UT at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 15th 2008. Viewings will be held Friday, November 14th from 6:30 to 9:00 PM, and Saturday November 15th from 9:00 to 10:30 AM at the same location. Interment will be held at Orem City Cemetery.
