Coral Ellen Wood

Coral Ellen Black Wood 1927-2011
Our darling girl, Miss Coral, died March 11, 2011, in Washington, UT, after a long illness. She was born February 7, 1927, in Salt Lake City, UT, to parents Clifton Lee and Nellie Leetham Black.
Dark haired, blue-eyed Coral was an obstinate and determined child. She grew into a popular, vivacious teenager, graduated from West High, where she excelled, and then continued her studies at the U of U. On February 27, 1946, Coral married classmate Darrell Evans Wood, still in the Navy, home on short leave. Love had evolved through their wartime correspondence. They wed at City Hall then caught the first train for California where Darrell was stationed. Hand in hand, one suitcase between them, thus began their great adventure. Throughout the years, through thick and thin, their love never wavered.
Coral was a woman of intelligence, insight, humor and quick wit. She championed the underdog and believed in lending a helping hand. Her background was varied and extensive. Through her work experiences she acquired skills and knowledge that enabled her to become advocate for the many who crossed her path. She was articulate and had backbone. She was someone you wanted on your side. Most of all she was a wonderful wife and mother. In retirement Coral volunteered at the Redding, CA, P.D. and the Red Cross.
Coral is survived by: Darrell, husband of 65 years; children, Mary, Elaine, and Scott (Patti); 5 beloved grandsons; 4 great-grandchildren; siblings Clifton, Thomas and Virginia.
