Having fulfilled a life of nearly 89 years, Dale H. Johnson passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 in Sandy, Utah ending an eight-month convalesence after an automobile accident. Dale was born August 2, 1920 in Pleasant Grove, Utah. He was the youngest son of Hyrum E. Johnson (founder of Utah Valley University) and LuRena Hayes Johnson. Dale served as a missionary in the Texas Lousianna LDS Mission. Dale was married for nearly 67 years to his sweetheart Afton Beal Johnson with whom he solomnized his love in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on October 23, 1942. Shortly after getting married, Dale joined the U.S. Army during WW II. He graduated with high honors from the University of Utah with a BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering and later obtained a Masters of Engineering Degree from UCLA. He became a nuclear physicist and worked with the Atomic Energy Commission and later Rockwell International designing nuclear reactors. Later in life, Dale changed careers and became a successful residential and commercial real estate broker and developer in Marin County, California and in Utah and Salt Lake Counties. Dale loved to fish, golf, swim, walk and travel. He was also an avid gardener. Neighbors and friends recall Dale working in his yard and garden pruning and pulling weeds and taking his 3 - 4 mile daily power walks throughout the Draper streets even at age 88 until the accident cut short his exercise routines. Most of all, Dale was a family man. He was greatly loved by his wife and five children, Sherrie (Lynford) Theobald of Draper UT, Dee (Zita) Johnson of Sandy, UT, Brad Lee (Debbie) Johnson of Tracy, CA, Stacy (Rick) Bettencourt of Petaluma, CA, and Lyn (Paul) Jakab of Novato, CA. He also has 13 grand children and 6 great grand children. Funeral Services will be held Monday, July 27, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Stokes LDS Chapel, 420 East Stokes Avenue (13500 S.), Draper, UT. A viewing will be held Monday morning from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM. Interment will be in the Pleasant Grove Cemetary.
