David Cecil Borden, 98, of LaVerkin, Utah, passed away peacefully in St. George, Utah on Monday, November 2, 2009. He was born in Los Angeles, California, October 25, 1911 to Frank Leslie and Marie Hahn Borden. He had one brother, Stanley Matthew Borden, and a sister, Pauline Birkholtz. David's mother passed away when he was nine years old.
David always seemed to be able to find a way to earn money. He sold newspapers as a young man. He worked in an auto repair shop and began his life's work in auto mechanics. After high school, he operated his own service station for a few years. He sold his station during World War II and joined the Signal Corps. From there he went to work for Douglass Aircraft. After the war he went to work briefly for Sears, and then began his career with the City of Los Angeles. He began as a mechanic's helper and worked up to shop foreman. He retired from LA City in 1976.
David received an Associate Degree from the East Los Angeles Junior College. He was a life-long student. He enjoyed Know Your Religion classes as well as Continuing Education classes he took through BYU. He was interested in gardening and did raised- bed gardening for several years.
David married Melba Johnson June 15, 1936 in Alhambra, California. David and Melba had two children, David Cecil Jr. and Carol Ann. David joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1947. He and Melba were sealed in the St. George Temple in February 1950. David Jr. and Carol were sealed to their parents in April 1950. The family lived in Los Angeles until 1952 when they moved to Whittier, California. Melba passed away August 10, 1966. David married Jean Irene Rawson on March 2, 1968. She preceded him in death in 2004. She had three children, Dawn (Bob Lindsay), Nelson (Debbie) and Gary (Pennye) Rawson. They have twelve children between them. There are 20 grandchildren.
David is survived by his son, David, and daughter, Carol Ann as well as eight grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Thus making a total of 20 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. David and Jean moved to La Verkin, Utah in 1979. They enjoyed many happy years together. After Jean's passing, David chose to live alone. Carol Ann was his driver and companion. She took him shopping, to the doctor, on rides around the lake and to one of their favorite eating places, Chuck-a-Rama.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the LaVerkin 5th Ward, 70 South 300 West in LaVerkin. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services, where friends and family may call. The interment will be at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California on Monday, November 9, 2009.
The family would like to thank all those who gave such kind and thoughtful care to David at Dixie Regional Medical Center, and to those of the LaVerkin 5th Ward who have watched over him these last several years.
