David Marden Chapman, 95, passed away October 3, 2010. He was born September 5, 1915 in Salt Lake City, Utah to David Charles and Hazel May Evans Chapman. Dave enjoyed childhood in the Sugarhouse area of Salt Lake. After gradating from South High School, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served for over nine years, mostly in the Pacific Theater before and during World War II. He was commissioned to Lieutenant-JG, serving as chief engineer on the LST 888, a beach landing craft. This ship transported and landed troops and heavy equipment on the Japanese-held islands during the war. He and his shipmates still meet together annually for a reunion. After the war, he worked for ADT, and later utilized his electronic skills with the U.S. Postal Service, where he spent most of his career. He married Fern Lillian Moulton on October 24, 1940 in Salt Lake LDS Temple. They had five children. After Fern's passing in 1963, he married June Pehrson in the Temple. They had one son. David is survived by his second wife, June and six children: Douglas M. (Sue) Chapman, LaRue (David) Howells, Jeanette "Jan" (Ross) Engle, Elaine (Garry) Dunster, Arlene (Douglas, deceased) Bassett, and Mark P. (Kathryn) Chapman. He has 35 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren, and 7 great, great grandchildren. David has one living sister, Carol Schoenhals (96). He was preceded in death by siblings, Esther Jensen, Virginia Wood, and Dr. Eugene H. Chapman, and five of his posterity. He was a lifelong and faithful member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and June served two missions for the Church. Dave loved life and found great joy in his family. We are missing this sweet and humble man, who had such a profound influence on our lives. We are comforted as we think of the joyful reunion he is experiencing with loved ones. The family will receive visitors on Saturday, October 9 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m, prior to funeral service at noon at the LDS Salt Lake Olympus Stake Center on the corner of 2700 East and 4500 South, Salt Lake City, Utah.
