David Robert Devine

David Robert Devine was born September 3, 1931 in Los Angeles, California. As a Jordan High School student, David excelled in football, track and boxing. As an excellent student and athlete, he became a member of Club Twenty and Key Club. David was an excellent horseman and race (sprint) car driver. After graduating from high school, David attended George Washington University and University of Maryland, where he boxed and became Eastern Golden Gloves Champion. Drafted during the Korean War, he served as a medic in Germany. After the war, David attended University of Utah, and graduated in 1958. David married Billie Ann Smith of Salt Lake City while they were attending University of Utah. David owned the Travis Motel in Reno, Nevada, and later served as Assistant General Manager of the State Line Hotel & Casino, in Wendover, Nevada. During this period, the Devine family added four children: Michael, Stacy, Kristin and Erin. After moving to Reno, David worked in real estate and insurance, eventually owning his own company, Devine Real Estate & Insurance, until his death. David served in a number of civic organizations, including the American Legion, Lions Club, and others. He also was active in Democratic Party politics in Elko County, serving as a delegate to the State Convention and Chairman for Elko County during Grant Sawyer's (former Nevada governor) political campaign. He was most proud of his service and leadership tenure in E Clampus Vitus, a venerable Nevada institution dating from the mining era. David served as "Grand Noble Humbug" for the Snowshoe Thomson Chapter, and was proud of his organization's care of "Young Widows and Old Orphans." David was an avid pilot, and loved his Beechcraft Bonanza. He was an accomplished mechanic and took care of his vintage Alfa Romeo. But David saved his greatest love and pride for his family. After a period of being single in Reno, David moved to Las Vegas to be with the love of his life, Deanna White. David was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Devine and mother, Peggy Greenhalgh. He is survived by his brothers Dick Prouse and James Webb; son, Michael Devine and wife Rita of Salt Lake City, Utah; Stacy Troutner and husband Brent, of Provo, Utah; Kristin Hartt and husband Richard of Vienna, Virginia; and Erin White and husband Shannon of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina; and 22 grandchildren. He leaves behind his best friend and soulmate, Deanna White, of Las Vegas, Nevada. Known for a ready smile and quick humor, many friends will miss him. The family wishes to thank the Veterans Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Institute, and the hospice nurses of CNS in Salt Lake City, Utah for outstanding and compassionate care. Services will be at the 27th East Ward Chapel (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) at 185 "P" Street, in Salt Lake City, Utah, with services beginning at noon, with a viewing in the preceding hour. He will be interred at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Services under the direction of SereniCare, funeral directors.
