Don graduated from Box Elder high school in 1947 and then served a full-time mission for the LDS church in the Central States Mission from 1947-49. Upon his return, Don married Donna Lucy Nelson August 3, 1951 in the Logan, Utah Temple.
Don received a bachelor's degree from Utah State University and a Master's degree from Brigham Young University. He worked over 35 years for the LDS Church Educational System as an administrator of Seminaries and Institutes in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and the Mediterranean countries of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Don enjoyed autumn afternoons watching BYU football and was a long-time Cougar Club member. He loved to organize and play in the annual Hunsaker Family Golf Tournament, and golfed often with his brother, sons and grandsons.
