Donald F Black

Don Black, son of Hyrum and Hester Black, loving husband of Wanda Hunt Black, and father of Jeanne von Zastrow, Joni Graves, Donna Franklin, and Heidi Ivie passed away peacefully at his home on November 16th after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his extended family and friends.
Don was born in Blanding, Utah, to Hester and Hyrum Black on April 13, 1932. He was raised in a loving home with six siblings (Cherril Stevenson , Ken Black, Calvin Black, Carol Black, Helen Walker, and Marilyn Lyman). He remained very close to them and enjoyed traveling and frequent visits.
He was a hardworking and enthusiastic entrepreneur and his wide range of experience included driving ore trucks, mining, farming, starting and growing several successful businesses, and then pursuing his passion; teaching. During his 25 years of teaching in the business department of Utah Valley University thousands of students benefited from his ability to illustrate business concepts with many personal examples and often funny stories.
Although he and his wife traveled throughout the world, there was no place he cherished more than the beautiful landscapes of southern Utah. He passionately explored and hiked all over the area, including every canyon from Rainbow Bridge to Dark Canyon during the many summers his family explored the rising waters of Lake Powell.
Don served in Germany during the Korean War at the Joint U.S. European Command Headquarters, where he held top secret clearances.
Don was a patriot and a life-long learner. He embraced adventure, loved to laugh, and was never happier than when he was surrounded by loved ones, including seven foreign exchange sons.
Don is survived by his wife, Wanda; three daughters, Jeanne (David von Zastrow), Joni (Kevin Graves) and Donna (Darryl Davis); ten grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Heidi Ivie, and his great grandson, Kolby Weske.
Viewing: Thursday, November 18 from 6-8 pm and Friday November 19 from 12:30-1:45 pm at the Edgemont Sixth Ward Chapel, 4000 North, 600 East, Provo, Utah, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 pm in the chapel
Don will be laid to rest at the Blanding Cemetery on Saturday, November 20, with a graveside service at 1 pm.
