Doris Ida Child Black, 82, of Orem, passed away Jan. 20, 2009 at her home. She was born December 3, 1926 at Bluewater, New Mexico to William Warren Child and Doris Emma Teitjen Child.
She spent her early years in Bluewater and was educated in Grants, New Mexico and Redwood City, Calif. She attended many colleges, including Contra Costa Jr. College and graduated with a B.A. from San Francisco State College. She married Devon Morley Black on Dec. 19, 1947 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple . She was a home maker and had worked as a school teacher, sold real estate and worked as a counselor. She was a Utah State Poets prizewinner and had received other recognitions for her poetry. She also wrote many short stories about her family. Her hobbies and interests included painting, creative writing and singing.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had served as a teacher in many of the auxiliaries and Seminary. Above all else, Doris loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She is survived by her husband of Orem; children: Shari (Leonard) Phister of Martinez, Calif., Diana (Larry) Ballard of Salem, Ut., Burke (Chris) Black of So. Jordan, Ut. , William (Carolyn) Black of Benicia , Calif. , Russel Black of Orem, Betty (Dain) Fackrell of Taylorsville, Ut., Suzanne (Ray) Schmitt of Orem; 24 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and a sister: LaRee (Child) Nooner of Alpine, Ut. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
Funeral services will be Sat., Jan. 24, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. at the Cascade LDS 1st Ward Chapel, 451 E. Center St. in Orem . Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. to the time of services. Burial will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund. The family would like to express their love and thanks to Carma with Sunrise Hospice for her devotion and kind assistance.
