Douglas Paul Pittelko

Douglas Paul Pittelko passed away peacefully on December 23, 2024, at the age of 62, surrounded by his family and friends at his home in Kamas, Utah.

Doug was born on August 18, 1962, to Harvey and June Pittelko in Seattle, WA. After graduating from Seattle Christian High School where he played basketball and soccer, Doug went on to study at the University of Washington and Seattle University.

During his studies Doug worked in the Alaskan fishing industry. After graduating with a degree in finance, he went on to work as a mortgage broker for several years. He also worked in the film industry as a stuntman until 1995, when he returned to fishing and took a position as a brine shrimp fisherman on the Great Salt Lake in Utah, where he leaves a real and lasting legacy as a leader, coworker, and friend. In 2006 Doug became a full-time employee of the Great Salt Lake Brine Shrimp Cooperative, Inc. where he was instrumental in putting together a world class team of professional fishermen and pilots. A deeply soulful person, Doug was known as an exceptional manager and a real people person with a very big heart.

A confirmed bachelor, Doug fell for the beauty of Özlem and found his soul mate. They married in 2004, moved to Kamas Utah, and went on to have two lovely children, Taylan and Cansu. He never imagined being a father, but once their children were born, he became the best parent ever. Taylan and Cansu brought out the “big kid” in Doug and he happily played with them, being his goofy self. He also taught them significant lessons in life. Most importantly he taught them about Jesus. Doug was a man of great faith, and he shared it with his children. More than one meal became cold when he taught them to pray the blessing.

Doug’s presence was larger than life. A 6.6-foot giant despite being born prematurely, he was physically, mentally, and spiritually strong—a free spirit who lived his life in the moment and forged friendships wherever he went. He had a passion for his dogs, the outdoors, and fast cars—particularly Porches. Shortly before he died, he had one last fast adventure in his Porche, scaring his good friend Greg and everyone else who learned of this ride. He loved diving, skiing, hiking, camping, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed many camping trips with family and friends, and instilled in his children a passion for the outdoors. He maintained many strong friendships throughout his life, because he was a true friend loyal to those he loved. Although Doug loved many people, he loved his family above all. His children always brought a big smile to his face, and he loved nothing more than to spend time with them.

After fighting cancer for 17 years, Doug peacefully returned home with the Lord just two days before Christmas. He is survived by his wife Özlem and children Taylan and Cansu; mother June Pittelko; brother Dave Pittelko; sister Sharon Lambuth and her husband John Lambuth; mother-in-law Meral Kence; brother-in-law Kutay Kence and his wife Evren and daughter Luna; niece Melina Mantey and her husband Matt Mantey and their child Eleanor June; nephew Jeremy Lambuth and his wife Ryann Lambuth; aunt Lynnete Slavicek and husband Jim; cousin Jim Slavicek. Doug was preceded in death by his father Harvey Pittelko and his father in-law Aykut Kence.

A celebration of life will be held on January 11 at 10 AM at Creekside Church, 1400 Bitner Road, Park City, UT 84090.
