Douglas Kent Winn

Today we celebrate Douglas's life and the wonderful times we have shared together.
Douglas Kent Winn (3/10/1940-3/15/2012) passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family; his eternal companion Joan, his 6 children, SanDee, Becki (Mike), Leigh (Linda), Julie (Karl), Jon (Heather) and Katie (Rob) and his dear sister Carlie (Reed) Erickson.
Douglas was born in Salt Lake City and named after his father Douglas Olsen Winn. Kent (as he was known by the family) spent the first 12 years of his life living at the Winn ranch with his Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and Grandmother. He spent his days stealing apples from the orchard, skinny dipping in the pond, and racing down Wasatch Boulevard in doodlebugs. He loved living the ranch life and being so close with his family.
He moved into town at twelve years old to live next door to his Uncle Ben and Aunt Marie and began to work for the family business, Winn & Company. His young life was full of fishing, camping, music, and family. He attended Granite High School and graduated in 1958.
He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the New Zealand North mission. Upon his return home he attended the University of Utah where he later graduated with a Bachelor's of Science, majoring in Entomology and Zoology.

Douglas married Nita Kay Schaerrer and had four children; SanDee Kay Winn, Rebecca Jean Durfey, Douglas Leigh Winn, and Julie Marie Winn. He later married Joan Beth Gerrard and had two more children: Jonathan Gerrard Winn and Katie Joan McCurdy. He now has fourteen grandchildren: Robert Neal Setina, Andrew Wayne Fitter, Ryan Douglas Winn, Delsi Joy Winn, Dustin Douglas Winn, Addisan Rose Winn, Raegann Cynthia McCurdy, Davis Robert McCurdy, Brylie Kate McCurdy, Korbin Douglas McCurdy, Asher Neil McCurdy, William Douglas Winn, Nathan Thomas Winn, and Emmett Joseph Winn. Douglas' best friends were his Sister Cathrine Carlie Erickson and his Brother-in-law Reed Milton Erickson.

Employment opportunities took Douglas from Duchesne Utah, to California. He served in the Utah Air National Guard. He worked as a mechanic, school bus driver, social worker, pharmaceutical representative, short haul truck driver, salesman, and retired from the Salt Lake County Health Department as a health inspector of restaurants.

Douglas was a man of great faith. He believed in God and in serving his fellow man. He served as a Bishop, in the High Council, and in various Ward and Stake leadership positions. He believed in the power of the priesthood and continually testified of the gift of healing. Douglas had his share of health problems from heart attacks to strokes; leaving him for six years partially paralyzed. However through his faith he remained on this earth with his family long enough to see marriages of his children, births of his grandchildren, and to teach us the meaning of humility, love, and eternal family.

Douglas appreciated great beauty. He loved his time in the outdoors. One of his greatest pleasures was spending time at his cabin. He enjoyed working at the cabin or just relaxing on the deck with a book or gazing into the stars. It was during these nights on the deck that Douglas would look into the heavens and testify to his children of God's plan for us as the creator of the universe. He was proud to be a ham radio technician and made several friends across the state on his hand held radio. His summers were spent working a ½ acre garden wearing his overalls and straw cowboy hat.
Douglas always had time for his children and grandchildren. He taught each of his kids how to fish, shoot, and work. He enjoyed playing catch, wrestling, and telling stories of his childhood.

Douglas will remain with each of us. His legacy is a part of who we are. We will miss him dearly.

Funeral services will be held Monday 3/19/12 at the LDS Chapel on 8173 S 3200 W, West Jordan Utah at 11:00 a.m. Viewings will be at the same location on Sunday evening 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Monday 10-10:30.
