Dwayne N. Andersen (91) passed away of natural causes on Monday August 13, 2012. He was born January 11, 1921, in Brigham City, Utah, to David O. Andersen and Ora Nelson. He was the 2nd of 7 children and was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Nida Rawlinson and Karma Huish. He is survived by Peggy Huish Andersen, his wife for 64 years, and his siblings David Odell Andersen, Lloyd N. Andersen, Lynette Carter, and Paul G. Andersen.
Dwayne was honored as the "all-around athlete" in high school. He filled a mission in Hawaii, 1941-1944, and worked in the Leper Colony, Molokai. In the US Army, WWII, he was wounded on the Shuri Line, Okinawa as an infantryman in the 96th Division, and was awarded 2 Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. He was promoted to First Sergeant in the Philippines.
At BYU, he completed a B.S. and Master's Degree in Education. He married Peggy Jean Huish of Douglas, Arizona, in the Mesa Temple in 1948. Dwayne was a math teacher at Dixon Junior High, 1949. After graduate work at Berkeley, he worked as a counselor in California. He spent seven years at Church College of Hawaii (now BYU-Hawaii) as Director of Foreign Students. At BYU-Provo, he served in Student Life until retirement in 1986.
LDS Church service: mission to Hawaii 1941-44; mission to Japan, 1951-53; mission president in Japan, 1962-65; Tokyo Temple president, 1980-82; church service mission in Provo, 1986-88; temple mission in South Africa, 1988-90; CES mission in South Africa, 1992-93. He was a bishop four times, a patriarch, and a temple sealer.
Being a husband, father and grandfather were his greatest blessings. Dwayne and Peggy had four children: Trudy (Rick) Olmstead, Carpinteria, California; Allen (Jennie) Andersen, Lehi, Utah; Valerie (Richard) Heaton, Provo, Utah; and Douglas (Karen) Andersen, Vernon, Utah; 26 grandchildren; and 29 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 12:30 pm at the Pleasant View 4th Ward Chapel, 2900 N 650 E (Timpview Dr), Provo, Utah. Family and friends may call on Friday evening, August 17, 2012 at the same chapel from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and on Saturday morning from 11:00-12:00 prior to services. Interment will be in the Veterans section of the Provo City Cemetery.
