Our dearest Edith Louise Gundersen Madsen, 97, most recently of Kennewick, WA., loving mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt passed away in Renton, WA on Wednesday, June 20, 2007.
Edith was born on January 16, 1910, in Salt Lake City, UT and was the oldest of nine children born to Orson Wilford Gundersen and Ingeborg Johanna Terjesen. She attended schools in Idaho and Utah and graduated from the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City before she married Louis Linden Madsen on September 21, 1932 in the Salt Lake Temple. Louis, former president of Utah State Agricultural College, Director of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences at Washington State University, and president of the Lewiston, ID Stake, preceded his wife in death on May 18, 1986.
Survivors include six children, Louis L. Jr. (Karen) CA, John M. (Diane) UT, David W. (Kathy) UT, Paul A. (Janet) WA, Roger B. (Leslie) ID, and Carol A. (David) Bastow NJ. Two daughters, Mary E. (Bruce) Stucki, and Patricia L. (Harry) Hayter, preceded their mother in death.
In addition to her eight children, Edith had 50 grandchildren and 122 great- grandchildren. Her first great-great-grandchild was born in February. Other survivors include brothers Joseph, Grant, David and John Gundersen of UT. Preceding her in death were her brothers Orson and Thomas and sisters Dorothy and Mary.
Edith grew up in an athletically and musically talented family. She excelled as a swimmer at Granite High School and was asked to train for the Olympics. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She loved to share stories of her family heritage with her children and grandchildren. She was well versed in the scriptures and committed many to memory. She loved to sew, play the piano and sing. She was a wonderful teacher and served in many ward and stake callings. She was also civic minded and actively participated in political events.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, June 30, 2007, at the Valley View 9th Ward chapel at 4101 South 1925 East in Salt Lake City, UT., preceded by a viewing beginning at 10:00 am. Interment will be at the Elysian Burial Gardens.
