Edward George Goebel died peacefully on March 26, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born September 6, 1944 in Zaandam, Netherlands to Christiaan and Francisca Horst Goebel, and along with his two older sisters and younger brother, the family immigrated to the United States in 1951. They settled in Salt Lake City where George loved tennis, roller-skating, and biking around Liberty Park.
He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1952 in the Salt Lake Tabernacle and remained a faithful member throughout his life. He attended South High where he first discovered a love of photography, and graduated in 1962. Shortly after, he was called to return to the Netherlands to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from 1963 to 1966, a period of two and a half years.
Upon coming home, he attended the University of Utah and was later drafted into the US Army, and spent most of his time at Ft. Eustis VA, was sent to Vietnam for a short time working on an air base, and finished his service at the Dugway Proving grounds.
He was married to Katheryn Mitchell on July 9, 1971 in the Salt Lake Temple and began their family while attending the U of U . He worked in the printing industry, mostly as a lithographer, and he and Kathy raised their 7 children in West Valley and Murray, where George was called as bishop of the Murray 12th ward.
After a bicycle accident in 1998, he was paralyzed but continued to find ways to serve others, indexing over a million names for the Family Search database. He was always grateful to the Veterans Association for the care he received from them during and after the accident. Although he was bedridden for the last 5 years of his life, he never complained and looked forward to being reunited with his Savior when the time came. The Goebel family would like to extend a very special thank you to Levy Suarez, his CNA of many years, and everyone else at Harmony Home Health and Hospice for all the incredible care they gave George.
He is preceded in death by his parents Christiaan and Francisca Horst Goebel. He is survived by his devoted wife Kathy, siblings Frances (Edward), Lenny (John El.), and John (Beth), loving children Matthew (Janalee) Goebel, Elise (Jed) Hafen, Amelia (Logan) McRae, Andrea (J. Chad) Erekson, Susie (Nathaniel) Johnson, Christiaan (Stefanie) Goebel, Tessa (Chris) Linford, and 27 grandchildren. All who deeply love him and will miss him greatly.
Private family Interment and Graveside Service will be Thursday, April 3rd at Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 E 4580 S, Millcreek, UT 84117. Funeral Services for Edward George Goebel will begin at 10:30 am on Friday, April 4th in the Hillcrest 6th Ward chapel. 8485 South 1000 East, Sandy, UT 84094.
