Eileen May Lewis Hanson

Eileen May Lewis Hanson, 86, passed away September 1, 2010 at her home in South Jordan, surrounded by her family.
She was born April 21, 1924 to John Harold Lewis and Ellen Power Lewis in Ton-Pentre, located in the Rhondda Valley in Southern Wales, Great Britain.
Eileen graduated from the Porth County School for Girls in 1942, and received a BA in English from Bristol University, England in 1946. She started her teaching career at Gravesend, near London, England. While she was there, she met her future husband who was serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. In December 1948, Eileen moved to the United States and married Frank Hanson on January 5, 1949 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
They lived in Silver City, New Mexico; Denver, Colorado; and Albuquerque, New Mexico. During this time they were blessed with 5 children. While in Albuquerque, Eileen joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was a devoted member of the church, serving faithfully in many callings. In 1963, Eileen and Frank moved their family to Huron, South Dakota. While in Huron, Eileen resumed teaching, a career she was very passionate about. She taught British Literature and Exposition at Huron High School for 19 years, retiring in 1987. Four years later, she and Frank moved to South Jordan, Utah.
Eileen had a passion for learning and was an exceptional student and teacher. She will be remembered for her loving nature, keen sense of humor and her willingness to help others. She loved and was extremely gifted at sewing, knitting, crocheting and quilting. Over the years, she made numerous quilts and blankets for family and friends. She also enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, going for walks and traveling. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She will be dearly missed.
Eileen is survived by her husband Frank, of South Jordan, Utah; one brother, Roy Lewis of North Shields, England; five children: Dale Hanson of Springfield, Virginia; Wayne (Renee) Hanson of Huron, South Dakota; Barbara (Wayne) Nielson of Stansbury Park, Utah; Andrea (Steve) Morgan of Lindon, Utah; and Renee Hanson of Lindon, Utah; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Parkway 1st Ward Chapel, 9894 South 2700 West, South Jordan, Utah. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will be held at the Providence City Cemetery, Providence, Utah.
The family extends their gratitude to all the friends, neighbors, and members of the Ward, and to Joe Spencer and the staff at Hearts for Hospice for their kind care and compassion.
