Elise "Bee" Voelker Hickman Black, 88, passed away, Monday, April 20, 2009. After a final struggle with cancer, she died at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family. Bee was born in Salt Lake City on October 14, 1920, to Ernest and Bessie Voelker. She was raised in Highland Park with her two younger sisters, Rachel Sturman and Bonnie Kopolovic. She was an active, energetic child, blessed with great musical talent and ability at an early age.
Bee often introduced her self by saying, "My nickname is 'Bee,' as in honey, bumble, killer, or queen." She led an active, full life. She was a gifted pianist and organist, a school teacher, a seamstress (sewing briefly for the Metropolitan Opera), an artist, and business woman.
Bee's children will always remember her for her great love and commitment. She was a working mother who surmounted many obstacles in providing them with a comfortable happy life.
In her later years, she took tremendous joy from her labors as an organist for the Provo, Salt Lake, and Mt. Timpanogos LDS Temples. She also served as a pianist at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building for several years. Her music has touched many in a profound and indescribable way.
Because of her faith and diligence, all three of her sons, and many of her grandchildren served full-time missions for the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Bee, too, was engaged in missionary service, having served multiple times as a church service missionary.
Bee is survived by her daughter, Gay DeJesus; her sons Randy Hickman and wife Adele; Rick Hickman and wife Jolene; and Scott Hickman. She is also survived by 53 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bee was preceded in death by her husbands June Hickman and Noal Black, her siblings, and parents.
Funeral services for Bee will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2009, 11:00am, at the Windsor 3rd Ward, 1405 North Main Street, Orem, Utah. A viewing will be held that morning from 9:30am to 10:45am. Interment will take place at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, Salt Lake City, Utah. Funeral arrangements are being handled through SereniCare Funeral Home.
Bee was dearly loved by her family and friends; she will be greatly missed.
