Elizabeth Janet Scrymgeour Brand was born on September 13, 1914, to Scottish parents, in Liverpool, England and passed away at the age of 95 ½ due to causes incident to age.
As a young child of 7, Elizabeth began caring for her mother, and often her siblings, due to their mother developing ALS and quickly becoming an invalid. She cared for her mother and siblings for about 16 years, and was a great help to her family. She had many happy and funny memories of her siblings and parents that she would often share with her own children and grandchildren.
After Elizabeth's mother passed away, during the pre-WWII era, she then left home to pursue a career. She chose to train for a nursing career, largely due to the experience of caring for her mother. But, as WWII broke out, she eventually joined the British Army and became the fastest teletyper in her post, which received news straight from the battle front.
When stationed in Aldershot, near London, in the post-war years, she met a handsome, young Dutch man, Evert Brand, who had joined the British Army. They married in 1947 in London, England. When he finished his term of enlistment, they moved to The Hague, Holland where their daughter, Diana, was born in 1948. One and a half years later, they moved to Scotland where their daughter, Melanie, was born in 1949. By January, 1953, they were back in The Hague again where Elizabeth worked now and then in nursing until her son, Evert James, (born in 1957) turned two.
As a homemaker, Elizabeth excelled in cooking (baking both Dutch and British delicacies) and also in knitting many beautiful sweaters (including Aran Isle)a"both to her family's delight. She decorated many beautiful cakes, and her family always enjoyed eating her creations. All who met Elizabeth loved her. She told many stories about her own life experiences in such a funny way that it left people in stitches! Elizabeth enjoyed having fun and dressing up at Halloween. She dressed up for Halloween even into her nineties!
While in Holland, Elizabeth became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints after several inspired sister missionaries found their way to her door. She was a very faithful Latter Day Saint throughout her long life. She taught several generations of primary age children and worked many years in the Family History Library branch near her home. Elizabeth greatly enjoyed attending the temple in her later years.
Elizabeth and her family immigrated to California in late 1959, beginning their life in America in La Crescenta, California and eventually settling in Orange County, California. It was there that she eagerly awaited the births of all of her grandchildren in her later years and also helped in raising several of them. Her door was always open to her family, and she spent much of her life serving them.
Elizabeth had more energy than most of her children and grandchildren! She was always "going and going and going", leading to her being nicknamed "The Energizer Bunny"; But she eventually wore out, after a valiant fight, on April 6, 2010, in Holladay, Utah, where she was cared for by the Willow Wood Care Center after becoming unable to walk, due to a leg infection, at age 92. Her family would like to express their gratitude to those who cared for her during those years at Willow Wood, and for them allowing her family to all come and celebrate holidays and special occasions with her as a group.
Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Evert Brand (CA), her younger sister, Flora Scrymgeour (Australia), her daughters Diana and Melanie (Gary) (UT), and her many grandchildren and great grandchildren: George, Andrea, Nathan, Jared, Sara, Laura, Annie, Helen, Andrew, Rachel, Rebecca, Adam, Jessica, Christopher, and Jacob.
Elizabeth is preceded in death by her son, Evert James, and her three brothers, Samuel Alexander Scrymgeour (of Liverpool, England), James Dewar Scrymgeour (of Greasby, England) and Colin Edwin Scrymgeour (of Bexill-on-Sea, England).
