Elizabeth Jane (Betty) Noonan St. George, UT
On Wednesday, February 16, 2011, Betty Jane Noonan fought her last battle in a year of poor health that began following the death of her husband, Marty Noonan, in January, 2010. Throughout the year, with every health setback, she was determined to regain her strength and 'get back on that golf course.' She managed admirably and was able to play a few games at Bloomington Country Club golf course in 2010 but pneumonia and infection from recent surgery won out on Wednesday and took our loving and vibrant mother to meet up with our dad on the 'greater golf course in the sky'.
Elizabeth Jane Malloy was born in Custer, SD, on May 10, 1924, to Roy and Beth Malloy. She was the seventh of nine children. In 1939, the family moved to Compton, CA, where she eventually met Charles Martin (Marty) Noonan. They married in June, 1943, before he shipped out with the First Marine Division to the Pacific in WWII. She gave birth to their first child, a daughter, Patricia Ann, in March of 1944, and then two sons, John Martin in 1946, and Michael Thomas in 1948. They were blessed with over 66 years of married life. Betty was a dedicated war and 50's era career women who began as secretary in 1952 to Roy E. Weatherby for his young firearms company, The Weatherby Rifle Company, in South Gate, CA. She advanced over the years to be a respected professional as Vice President of Sales at the firm. She retired in 1989but stayed on as a Founding Board Member of the Weatherby Foundation. She produced a bi-annual newsletter in addition to other board member duties. She was active in the Foundation until this year. She was a key organizer of the Weatherby Big Game Trophy Dinners held each year since 1955. Her achievements earned her an entry in Women's Who's Who of America. Since 1992, Betty and Marty were active golf members of the Bloomington Country Club in St. George. In 2002 she was the President of the Bloomington Country Club Ladies Golf Association. She was also voted the first woman president of the Bloomington Country Club Board of Directors for 2004/2005.
She is survived by her sister, Margaret (Peggy) Deller, St. George, Utah; her children, Pat Selby of Livermore, CA, and Marty Noonan of Amery, WI; seven grandchildren, Elijah Shannon (Selby) Kogan, Erin and Andy Selby, Ryan and Kelly Noonan, and Jenna and Sara Noonan; and a great-grandson, Noah Thomas. She is preceded in death by her youngest child, Michael.
