Ellen Daskalas

Ellen Kounalis Pantelakis Daskalas, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother left us on March 3 for her next adventure. She was born in Salt Lake City on May 8, 1916, and died of complications due to cancer at the age of 91.
Ellen was born to immigrant parents, Blenda Bergstrom from Sweden, and Sam Kounalis from Greece. She was the oldest of nine children. Ellen attended South High School where she was active in vocal and instrumental music. She played first chair in the second violin section with two community orchestras, the McCune and Westminster Orchestras. Ellen studied sculpturing under Dr. Fairbanks, and enjoyed numerous crafts like pottery and statuary creations.
She married Mike Pantelakis (1909-1963) in 1937, and they raised four children, George M. Pantelakis (Martha), Nicholas E. Pantelakis, Terry S. Pantelakis (Bessie), and Mary Pantelakis Katsanevas (Nick).
She married Demetrios Daskalas in 1968, and Demetrios introduced Ellen to Greek bouzouki music, which she performed with him on stage while on the road. In 1970 they decided to settle in S.L.C. and opened "The Pawnshop". Ellen was the first female pawnbroker in Utah.
Ellen and Demetrios traveled extensively, which included fifty cruises to the Holy Land, Greece, Italy, Spain, Russia, Yugoslavia, Egypt, and North Africa. They also traveled the Caribbean, South America, and Hawaii. Ellen and Demetrios owned a condo in Kifisia, Greece, a suburb of Athens, for many years, and visited it regularly. After they retired in 2001, they enjoyed short trips to Las Vegas and Wendover.
Her husband Demetrios Daskalas, and her children survive her. Her sister, Katherine Biondo, brother Byron and his wife Ardith Kounalis, and brother Roy Kounalis also survive her.
Ellen's son, Nick, deserves an extra thank-you for all of his hard work and support of mother. He was our angel. Mother was very appreciative and so are all of us.
The funeral services will be held at the Rodeo Lane Chapel, 6350 So. Rodeo Lane (1545 East off 6400 South) on Saturday, March 8, 2008. The viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 9:00 AM to 10. The funeral will begin at 10:15 AM. Graveside services will be held at the Mount Olivet Cemetery, 1342 East 5th South, (801) 582-2552 at 12:00 Noon
