Elree George Barr
"Butch"
September 5th 1921 ~ March 18th, 2011
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather returned home to our Father in Heaven on March 18, 2011, surrounded by his loving family.
Butch was born to Caroline Elizabeth Winter and Elree James Barr on September 5, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He grew up in both Bountiful and Salt Lake City. He graduated from West High School in 1940 after being a "senior" for two years so he could play football for another season. After graduating, he became a line man and telephone repairman for Mountain Bell Telephone Company.
Butch enrolled into the United States Marine Air Corp. He was a flight instructor during WWII. During that time, he met Aletha Ann Harrison in Corpus Christi, Texas. They married on October 28, 1944. They were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple October 28, 1949. Butch and Aletha had 4 sons: Lance (Sue) Barr, Kent (Collette) Barr, Craig (Lori) Barr, and Jeff (Wendy) Barr. In 1952, Butch was reactivated to be a pilot during the Korean Conflict. He loved to fly the Corsair and the AD Sky Rader.
In 1979, Butch's wife Aletha took ill with cancer and passed away. Butch married Minola Ann Hopkinson in 1979. Minola had 4 children with her previous spouse Roy Hopkinson; Steve (Sarah) Hopkinson, Brent Hopkinson, Suzanne (Larry) Mick and Lynda Bishop. With a combined family of 8 children, life was always full of joyous reunions with the children and grandchildren.
He retired from Mountain Bell in 1983. After his retirement, he enjoyed many years of being an ordinance worker at the Salt Lake Temple. He also took great joy in teaching his grandchildren about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Butch loves his family very much and it was hard for him to leave, but we know that there were many Angels waiting to meet him on the other side. We greatly miss him and wish he was still with us. But we know of our Heavenly Father's eternal plan of happiness and wait to meet him once more.
Butch is survived by his wife, Minola, all 8 children, 35 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his eternal companion Aletha, his parents Elree and Caroline Barr, brothers: John Stirling and Ralph Stirling, sister, Francis Gray and grandson Eric Sanda. A viewing will be held on Friday, March 25th, 2011 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, and Saturday, March 26, 2011 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at his LDS Ward House, located at 3408 Celeste Way, SLC, UT 84109. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 26th, 2011 at 11:00 am. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, UT 84106
