Elvira Elizabeth "Sue" Shurtleff passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday August 4, 2009 in Orem and was reunited with her husband and loved ones. She was a loving, caring mother and grandmother. She was a friend to all who knew her. She was 88. Sue got her nickname when her Aunt Loretta Crabtree brought her in after her at home birth and exclaimed "and then came Sue" the title of a popular fiction story. She was born on September 3, 1920. She was the youngest of six, five living, of William John Steele and Margaret Mathison Crabtree. She was allowed to climb trees, go barefoot and was able live life without too much discipline as she was the "baby of the house". She attended every school in Idaho Falls but one, Eagle Rock, two years in Burley and one in Berkeley California, staying with her sister Sonoma, her husband and four year old daughter, Joyce. When a sophomore her family moved to Pocatello, where she attended Pocatello High School. She returned to Idaho Falls with her family for her Senior Year. Two years were spent at University of Idaho, Southern Branch, where she was a Charter member and later President of Beta Sigma Phi Social Sorority. She has kept in touch with dear friends from school thru out the years. She worked as a waitress at Pond's Lodge before college. She retired from Garrett Freight Lines. She enjoyed bowling on Garrett's team, also playing Pinochle, and Bridge with friends and co-workers. During the World War II years she served as a nurse's aide, canteen worker at the Railroad Hut and hostess at the service men's dances as did all her friends. She met Mark Agren Shurtleff as a blind date through close friends. They met before the war but waited until after to marry on May 14, 1947. Later they were married in Idaho Falls Temple on May 15, 1962 and were sealed with their two children. In 1949 she was elected President of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed the service and friendship with them and was a member until her death. A daughter was born, Annette, on June 2, 1950. A son, Mark Scott, followed on March 18, 1952. In 1989 she went in for a gall bladder operation and came out in a coma. She came out of the coma but had to relearn life's living skills. Their first home was at 373 Filmore in Pocatello, Idaho where they lived for 35 years in the Thirteenth Ward. In 1993 they moved to American Fork, Utah to be closer to children. Mark passed away Dec 1, 1995. She is survived by daughter, Annette (Newell "Lynn") Turner and son, Mark Scott (Alene) (Naomi); twelve grandchildren, six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sister. Thanks for the loving care at Orem Rehab and Nursing and Love Hospice. Services will be at 10 a.m. on August 8, at the Hillcrest 4th Ward Chapel, 700 N and 350 W in American Fork Utah. Family and friends may call one hour prior to service. Interment in Pocatello, Idaho approximately 4:00 pm that day where there will be a graveside.
