GARTH McCUNE PAXMAN "SOAP" 12/31/1923 - 12/31/ 2011
Garth "Soap" our loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully on his 88 birthday, December 31, 2011, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Garth was the oldest of 4 children born to Samuel George Paxman and Georgetta McCune. Born and raised in Salt Lake City, he graduated from East High, the University of Utah, and Loyola University Dental School in Chicago, IL. He interrupted his schooling to join the Navy and served there until the end of WWII. After the war Garth attended the U of U and was a valued member of their track and field team. He was invited to compete in the qualifying timed trials for the 1948 Summer Olympic Games, but he turned down the invitation to serve an LDS mission to South Africa. Following his mission He married Betty Jean Barber in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they moved to Chicago where Garth attended Dental School. Upon graduation, Garth and Betty settled in Chandler Arizona when they lived, worked, served, and raised their family for more than 40 years. As a dentist, his patients lovingly called him "Painless Paxman". After retiring from Dentistry, Garth and Betty returned to their roots in Salt lake City, Utah. Garth was a hardworking father; devoted and determined in raising responsible and grateful children. He loved others and served as a Bishop of the Chandler 2nd Ward for 13 years. He always lived his faith. Garth and Betty have 3 children; Diane Langeland (Emil) of Salt Lake City; Tom Paxman (Sherrie) of Pinetop AZ; and Nancy Taylor (Mark) of Scottsdale AZ. Garth and Betty also have 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Garth is survived by his 3 children, and 2 sisters, Marva Paxman Tobler and Sallee Assenberg Keller. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and sister Patricia Paxman Smith. The family is grateful to Dr. Crystal Owens, as well as Andrea, Scott, Heather, Laura and the rest of the staff of Millcreek Home Health and Hospice. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday January 7, 2012 in the Federal Heights Chapel, 1300 Fairfax Rd, Salt Lake City. We invite family and friends to celebrate and reminisce upon Garth's life with his children one hour prior to his funeral. Arrangements under the direction of SereniCare Funeral Home.
