Herbert Ralph Newton 1912 - 2007
Herbert Ralph Newton, 95, died Sunday, October 14, 2007 following brain surgery complications. A beloved, happy and spiritual Hawaiian "Grandpa" to many, he was born on July 28, 1912 in Kula, Maui, Hawaii, to Russell and Annie Newton; one of eight siblings raised on a farm on the volcano. He brought joy, the spirit of the islands and his love of the restored gospel to loved ones and strangers alike. Everyone who rode a bus with him was offered a Book of Mormon. He served valiantly in the LDS Church on two missions with his wife, and as a Bishop, High Councilman and other callings. He worked as a radio technician in Hawaii during WW II, retiring in Utah after co-owning a house moving business in California with brother Edmund. He lost his sweetheart of 65 years in 2003, Eva Parker Newton, whom he married in the Hawaiian temple in 1938. He left a rich legacy of hard work, spiritual commitment and was a devoted family man and friend to many.
He is survived by two brothers; George (Honolulu) and Edmund (California) Newton, his daughter Gwen Anderson (Orem), grandsons Keoni (wife Marcela), Kyle and Grant Anderson, and great grandchildren Maile and Logan Anderson. His long life is a testament that happiness is possible through faith and devotion to a loving God.
