Jennifer Lee Hertzig Monroy Luther passed away due to complications associated with her 13-year long journey with metastatic breast cancer. Originally diagnosed as Stage III, the majority of her battle was in Stage IV. She continually acknowledged her unceasing faith and positive attitude were the reason she was able to live as long as she did. Jennifer has always been grateful for the growth she gained through her trials and looked forward to the refinement.
Jennifer was born in 1972 in Brigham City, Utah to Janet Thorne and Elden “Buzz” Hertzig. She was raised in Aromas (near Watsonville) and Oakdale, California. After graduating from Oakdale High School in 1990, she attended Ricks College graduating in Professional Preschool Education. She went on to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in West Virginia where she met and later married Jared Luther in the Oakland California Temple. Together they raised four children and have six grandchildren. Being a wife and mother were her greatest joy and ambition, only to be surpassed by becoming a grandmother.
Jennifer was blessed to work as an aide and substitute teacher at Thomas Edison Charter School in Nibley, Utah. At first to be consistently available for her own children during their time in elementary school, she stayed for 12-years. She found delight and satisfaction working with children to help them achieve success in academic as well as personal development. She loved watching her students push through the tough times and develop a love of learning early in their young lives.
Jennifer found great joy in her testimony of Jesus Christ and the opportunity to serve. She loved serving as a Ministering (Visiting) Sister as well as her role in various ward Relief Society and Primary Presidencies. She naturally loved teaching Sunday School and Primary classes as well as a surprisingly enjoyable turn as Young Women’s Camp director. She thrived when feeling God’s love for his children and helping others to feel His love for them. Her favorite times were being one on one with others where she could testify of the things she knew to be true and her deep faith for the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Jennifer is preceded in death by her father Buzz, her younger brothers John-John and Brian, grandparents LaVon and Theda Thorne, as well as in-laws Karen Doyle Luther and Harvey Luther. She is survived by her husband Jared, children Amily (Colby) Nielsen (grandchildren Kaylee, Koda, Kolten, Kaden, Savannah, and Sadie), Kyra Luther, Tia Luther, and Jordan (Kiah) Luther, Parents Vince and Janet Monroy, and siblings Amanda (Jeff) Nelson, Brandon (Shanna) Monroy, Josh (Angelee) Luther, Rebecca (Issac) Fransisco, and many nieces and nephews.
