Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Jesse Fredrick Shumway has gone back to that God who gave him life. He was called home from Provo, Utah on November 12, 2008 after a brief illness. He was the 10th child of Clarence and Esther Smith Shumway, born on September 29, 1929 in Lakeside, Arizona. All his family loved him dearly. They will miss his hugs and smiles.
Jesse grew up in Arizona and loved the outdoors. He fulfilled an LDS mission to Japan, served in the U.S. Army in Korea and later graduated from BYU. While at BYU, he met his future wife, Patricia Ruth Hilton and from this union came 9 wonderful children. He worked as an Aerospace Engineer in Utah and the San Francisco Bay Area. After he retired in 1997, Jesse and Patti involved themselves in missionary service for the LDS Church, fulfilling 3 full-time missions together.
Jesse is survived by his wife, Patti; their children, Jesse Fredrick, Jr. (Lindsay Maitland), Douglas Hilton (Chikako), Daniel Glen (Celestia), Eve Patricia Dowdle (Michael), Samuel Smith, Andrew Eugene (Megelyn), Naomi Esther, Sally Elizabeth Gierisch (Brian), and Mary Janette Hoffman (Marty); brothers and sister, Beula Petersen, Ardeth Shumway, and Phil Shumway; 43 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and 6 siblings.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2008 in the Edgemont 6th Ward Chapel, 4000 N. Timpview Drive (650 East), Provo, Utah. Friends and family may call at the Church for a visitation that morning from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. Interment at East Lawn Memorial Hills.
