John Michael Lugenbeel September 19, 1949 to March 26, 2011
John M. Lugenbeel, age 61, of Murray, Utah passed away Saturday, March 26, 2011 at his home in Murray. He was born September 19, 1949 in Rifle, Colorado, the son of Basil Llewellyn Lugenbeel and Betty Kay Purkey.
He grew up in Bountiful and was a member of the Bountiful Pony League Baseball Team that took first place in their region and placed second at the Little League World Series in 1962. He could claim that he had played ball at Wrigley Field in Chicago and at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
As a boy, his early years were spent going to Colorado to help with his grandpa's packing plant and spending time with his cousins. Following his graduation from Bountiful High School he joined the United States Navy where he served four years on the Air Craft Carrier, U.S. Constellation.
On October 10, 1982, he married Marilyn (Marse) May in Elko, Nevada. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk, a special delivery carrier and a letter carrier. He retired from the postal service after illness impeded his work.
John was an avid bowler and played in several leagues throughout Salt Lake City. His greatest day was bowling a 300. He loved to fish and B.S. He could tell you all about baseball and loved to discuss politics. He is remembered as the most giving person to anyone and everyone, especially to his loving wife Marse.
John is survived by his wife; Marse, his children; John Michael Lugenbeel II, Jeanne (Gus) Miskovsky and Jon (Anne) Scott. His mother Betty Kay Mitchell, his father; Basil L. Lugenbeel, sister; LaVeta (Larry) Pennock and ten grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister; Peggy Jo Lugenbeel and his step-father, William Perry Mitchell.
There will be a memorial service held on Thursday, March 31, 2011 in the Utah Veterans Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel in Bluffdale, Utah (17111 S. Camp Williams Road) at 3:00 pm. The family will meet with friends there from 2 to 3:00 pm. Graveside services will be held following the memorial in the UVMP Cemetery.
We appreciate the loving care that was given to John. We express this to those who served us at St. Marks Hospital, the VA Hospital and to the staff of Superior Hospice for lifting our hearts. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Shriners Childrens Hospital.
