John Allen Mohlman

John Allen Mohlman stepped through the veil to his eternal home August 18, 2024 surrounded by those he loved the most. John was born March 30, 1943 in Roosevelt, Utah to John Willard Mohlman and Cleo Mary Allen Mohlman and two adoring sisters, Merilee (Larry Arnoldsen) and Cheryl (Lewis Allred).

The family moved to Elko, Nevada when John was four years old and Elko became his beloved home. He played little league baseball during his growing up years and had many wonderful memories of his childhood friends. 

John was a natural athlete and excelled in every sport. In High School he lettered in baseball, basketball and football. While attending Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, he played for Larry Miller’s competitive fast-pitch softball team in Salt Lake City. When he moved to Mesa, Arizona his church league fast pitch team competed in the all church Softball tournament playing teams from across the country in Salt Lake City. When he finished competing in sports, he became a high school, church, and community referee for many sporting events. 

He graduated in 1961 from Elko High School. He attended BYU and received a Bachelors and Masters degree in Electrical Engineering. He later received a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Arizona State University. 

John had a beautiful singing voice and loved music. He played trombone in his high school band, loved singing and playing his guitar, and was known for his “radio voice”- doing color and play-by-play reporting for his local radio station, KELK. He sang in many church choirs, and he and Jeanette sang in the Jay Welch Chorale (now the Utah Choral Society) for many years. In his last few years he enjoyed many hours of peace as he sang along to familiar tunes from his teen years.

John was blessed to live out many of his young boyhood dreams. When he was 14 he worked at Gil's Gas and Grease pumping gas and working on cars. At age 16 he and a friend worked as cowboys on a ranch owned by Bing Crosby, sleeping in the bunkhouse with the "old" cowboys, haying and rounding up stray cattle. During his summers while he was in college he was a firefighter for the Bureau of Land Management, fighting forest fires in the federal and state forest lands around Elko, Nevada.  His favorite part of fighting fires was the huge steak he ate at the Commercial hotel after being on K-rations for three to five days. Finally, John's dream of being  “An Army Guy” also came true by serving in the military as a communications specialist after graduating from Wel-tech College in Salt Lake City. 

His first job out of college was for Motorola Government Electronics in Scottsdale, Arizona where he designed communications equipment for the space program. He worked on the Mariner and Voyager satellites, which are still sending data and radio signals more than 50 years after they were launched, they still orbit Mars, Venus and Jupiter. John still has communication equipment that he built on the moon. He managed the Elko Power Department 1976-1982, Murray City power from 1984-1999. He was then asked to design an intranet system for the city and the communication system used to deliver internet to Murray City Citizens. When he left Murray City he taught Calculus and other advanced math courses for Salt Lake Community College until he joined the newly developed engineering department at Salt Lake Community college. John and Jeanette operated a construction company in Mesa, AZ until 2008. 

John found much joy in serving the Lord. From his early adult years he served in many leadership roles, from bishoprics to high council. His favorite job was home teaching although it was challenging, he loved “his people”.

He met his wife at BYU in 1967 and they married in the Mesa Arizona Temple July 5, 1968. They were married for 56 years. He loved his family and enjoyed many hobbies with them such as snow skiing, boating/water skiing, camping, hiking, traveling, and gardening. He is the best grandfather “papa” and loved reading and singing to his grandchildren. As the grandchildren got older, he loved watching them in their sports and other activities–he is their greatest fan.  He also loved going on trips as a family. He and Jeanette served a full-time proselyting mission to Temple Square in Salt Lake City March 2009-September 2010. In November 2011 they were called to serve a church service administration mission at the church office for the transportation department. Mid 2012 they were called to serve in the Accounting department/Property Reserve as auditors of church owned properties on mainland and Hawaii. They were released in March 2017. 

John’s greatest joy came from being a husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette, his children Jason (Wendy Ham), Jerica (Nels Berge), and Jodilyn (George Silva) and eight beloved grandchildren, McKade, Nathan, Lauren, Alyssa, Austin, McKian, Ethan and Karlee. 

He loved his extended family, his brother and sister-in-laws and his nieces and nephews. Final goodbyes meant so much, thank you!! 

There will be a viewing with the family, Thursday, August 22, 2024 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Round Rock Ward, 5623 W. Mirabella Dr., Herriman, Ut, 84096.  A funeral service will be held at this same location at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024.  John will be interred at the Herriman City Cemetery.
