John Spencer Nowell
"Family Patriarch"

1916-2012
Lovingly known as "Bate" our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend passed away peacefully at home with his family on March 13, 2012. Spencer, the youngest of five children, was born on March 16, 1916 in Salt Lake City to Clara Leone (Horne) and Ambrey Nowell.
He married Edna Elizabeth Meeks on June 25, 1948. Together they raised four children until Edna passed away in 1959. His remarkable devotion to his family continued. On April 2, 1977 he married Beverly B. Bullock who passed away in 2002.
Spencer served as editor-in-chief of the East High School newspaper and went on to graduate from the University of Utah where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Spencer served n in the U.S. 3rd Army during World War II as a captain in the 778 antiaircraft automatic weapons battalion where he proudly participated in the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne.
After the war, he spent most of his career in the construction industry holding various management positions with Gibbons & Reed and Weyher Construction. Always a gentleman, he was loved and admired by all who knew him. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life; his family, home, and a sunny day on the front porch. He understood the recipe for a long and happy life and followed it. His kind and gentle spirit will remain in our hearts forever.
He is survived by and will continue to be loved by his children: Gary (Jane Ann) Anthony, Roger Ambrey Nowell, Byron Ray (Ann) Nowell, and Nicolette (Dennis) Hales. He leaves behind several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nephews whom he greatly loved and cherished.
A family service was held in his honor.
