John William Smith

John William Smith passed away peacefully on April 21, 2009 at the home of his son. For the last 18 years he battled prostate cancer and all it's complications with courage and a dignity. He is now free of the pain and discomfort he endured with out complaint or bitterness.
He was born 7/9/36 in Park City, UT to Theodore L. and Eva Smith. He was known as "Billy" until he joined the Air Force in '54. In January '62 , John earned his journeyman status as a Air Traffic Controller and began a career he claimed was "the best job ever". He married Shirley A. Maier in April of '60.", John was preceded in death by his father ('58) mother ('74) brother Ted Smith ('96) and his eldest child Scott W. Smith ('98). JW is survived by his sister's Gloria, Marian and brother Ed Smith. His son's Eric J Smith (Marcella); Greg L. Smith, daughter Kristina E. Smith, who refer to him as "JW". After 38 years of service to the federal government he retired and moved to Mesquite, Nevada where he made a lot of dear friends, played a lot of bad golf, and a surprisingly lucrative slots! However you referred to John (Billy, JW or Smitty) he's remembered as a good and loyal friend. He never wavered in his friendships and could connect with you regardless of age or gender.
JW stayed active by playing golf, hiking/camping, and skiing. His passion for skiing was evident in his mastery in the trees and lengths he'd go to for 'great powder shot'. Golf and hiking were more about time with friends. This was clearly evident when he'd tee off with his signature "banana ball". Some of his best times were his camping and river expedition's with family and friends. He always enjoyed the companionship, banter and maybe even a few cocktails long the way. You might be one of his many friends asking the family "what can I do?", JW's last request was simply that all his friends gather for 'one last toddy' to remember the friendship he enjoyed from you all. A memorial service will be held on Monday April 27 at 11 am @ Redwood Memorial Mortuary 6500 South Redwood Rd. After the service please join family and friends to celebrate the Life on JW with 'one last toddy' at the home of Eric and Marcela Smith, 8958 S 2070 W, W Jordan, Utah.
