Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Lawrence William Early, Jr., 72, died peacefully on February 17, 2009 in St. George, Utah. He was born February 22, 1936 in Ducktown, Tennessee to Lawrence W. and Ada Marie Ellett Early.
Larry grew up in Wilmington, Delaware and Pasadena, California and moved to Salt Lake City in the 1950s where he attended Stewart School and East High School, class of 1954. On June 13, 1959, Larry married Heather Lynne Brown in Salt Lake City. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1960 with a BS degree in chemistry and biology. He was in the Utah Army Reserve and was honorably discharged in October of 1966. He began his career with Hercules, Inc., at the Bacchus Plant in Utah and was transferred to Wilmington, Delaware in 1966.
Larry was president of the Wilmington Jaycees in the 1970s. In December of 1996, he became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and attended the Rising Sun Branch in North East, Maryland and the Wilmington West Ward in Wilmington, Delaware. He and Heather were sealed in the Washington DC Temple in January of 1998.
In 2003, Larry and Heather retired to St. George, Utah where they were members of the Sunset 8th Branch, Sunset Stake. Larry was a counselor in the High Priest group and later second counselor in the Branch presidency. He worked in the baptistry at the St. George Temple. He was a marshall at the Southgate Golf Course and served on the board of the Springfield Estates Homeowners Association.
He is survived by his wife and four children: Kathryn Elizabeth (Robert) Benham, Rising Sun, Maryland; Stephen Isaac (Tracy Bunting) Early, Newark, Delaware; Sarah Jane (Bryon) Condie, Santa Clara, Utah and John Benjamin Early, New Castle, Delaware. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Ben McClave, Sacramento, California and his brother, Tom E. Early of Lake Oswego, Oregon. He is the grandfather of Matthew, Suzanne, Heidi, Thomas, Lance, Heather and Ada.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at the Sunset 8th Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 82 North Dixie Drive, St. George, Utah. A viewing will be held at the church one hour prior to services. Interment will follow at Tonaquint Cemetery.
The family expresses its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Larry's doctors and the nurses, aides, technicians and staff at Dixie Regional Medical Center, the St. George Rehabilitation Center, the home health nurses of Gentiva and Intermountain Home Care.
