On June 22, 2012 Katherine Diane (Kathy) Lee won the battle, but lost the war, in her fight against ovarian cancer. When told in 2006 that 97% of the Stage 4 victims of this disease would be gone within five years, she vowed to be in the 3% that remained - a goal that she more than achieved.
Left behind are her daughter Sarah, her parents Maughan and Carol, her brothers and their wives: Robert (Hideko), David (Beth), and Bruce (Erika), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Also mourning her passing is her golden retriever, Taiyo.
Kathy was born in Montebello, California on September 6, 1958. Her family moved to Provo when she was four: pre-school at BYU, elementary at Joaquin, junior high at Farrer, and most of high school at Provo. Although she graduated from Herndon High School in Fairfax County, Virginia (1977) Provo High continued to claim her at reunion time. Her bachelor's degree was from BYU in 1981. She took her master's at The College of William and Mary a year later. In 2008 she received an honorary doctorate from Synergy State University.
Her first job out of school was as a probation officer for the State of Utah. This lasted but a few months when she became the sole counselor at Farrer Middle school, where she remained for 18 years. When Farrer was phased out, she moved to Timpview High School as one of several counselors. Kathy took early retirement from Timpview in 2007 for the medical reason noted.
In the course of her counseling career Kathy influenced the lives of thousands of young people, many of whom have stayed in touch over the years. Not only was she their school counselor, but also their confidant. Kathy always put the needs of others before her own, especially those of her family. Kathy kept her sense of humor and her beaming smile throughout, and faced the challenges and pain without complaint. She passed from this life with the same dignity and grace with which she lived it. Of her various LDS Church callings, her favorite was working with the Young Women.
Kathy loved to travel, but the twice monthly trips for over a year to the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland pretty much satisfied that desire. Notwithstanding, she visited Orlando, Palm Beach, Williamsburg, Jamestown, West Yellowstone, Nauvoo, Laie, and Kailua-Kona after her diagnosis.
Funeral services will be held at the Oak Hills 1st Ward,1038 N. 1200 East, Provo, on Saturday, June 30 at 11:00 a.m. Visitations will be at that same location Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., and Friday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
