Kathleen ("Kaye") Conrad Johanson, born to Stan and Cathy Conrad on July 9, 1946 in North Hollywood, California, passed away November 8, 2011 in her home, surrounded by her family, due to complications from cancer.
Kaye spent many years of her youth traveling the world with her family as a result of her father's employment as a geologist. Experiences gained from a life of travel allowed her the opportunity to participate with the American Field Service and become a foreign exchange student in Germany.
Kaye moved to Utah in 1965 to attend school at Utah State University. She prided herself on her membership in the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority where she gained many lifelong friends. In 1967, she met Michael D. Johanson at a surf dance in Logan, Utah. Through that relationship she pursued her interest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was baptized in July of 1967. Mike and Kaye married on September 13, 1967 and were sealed for time and all eternity in 1968, on their first wedding anniversary.
Soon after their marriage, Kaye and Mike relocated to Salt Lake City to pursue Mike's education. Kaye worked hard for four years supporting Mike while he finished his degree. In May of 1971 she achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a mother when they welcomed their first child into the world. Kaye and Mike were happy parents and welcomed five more children into the family through the next eight and a half years. Her children - Mindy, Michael, Natalie, Damon, Brett, and Tierney - were the light of Kaye's life.
After all six children were in school, Kaye continued her schooling, completing a dual degree in Elementary Education and Social Work. Kaye and Mike always valued education and showed their children this through their examples. As a teacher, Kaye was able to touch the lives of many students and fellow teachers with her tender spirit, loving care, and nurturing personality.
Kaye had a very strong and deeply ingrained testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She shared that testimony through her example to her family and friends. Given the challenge to double her temple attendance, she embraced that challenge and went to the temple weekly. She felt great joy from service to her church and her family. Her positive influence and testimony were felt by all. Kaye's hobbies and interests were a direct reflection of the interests of her family. She embraced motherhood, nurtured, served, and sacrificed for her loved ones in every capacity. She was not only a mother of her own six children, but to all who entered her home.
Kaye was preceded in death by her parents and parents-in-law. She is survived by her husband Mike and six children, Mindy (Scott) Crowford, Michael (Dee) Johanson, Natalie (Brandon) Carlile, Damon (Jodi) Johanson, Brett (Allison) Johanson, and Tierney (Andrew) Syndergaard, and 16 grandchildren whom she adored, with a 17th on the way.
A memorial service for Kaye will be held in the LDS chapel located at 7035 Lochness Avenue in West Valley City, Utah 84128, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2011.
