Kathryn Johnston

KATHRYN HALLMAN JOHNSTON
Our beloved Kathy passed away on January 6, 2010 in her home surrounded by loved ones. Kathy had fought a great battle with cancer for the past three years. Kathy was born on July 2, 1938 in Oakland, California. She is the daughter of Paul Joseph and Alice Vera Hoyt Hallman. She graduated from Piedmont High School and then attended Brigham Young University where she received a Bachelors Degree in Speech/Drama with a minor in French. It was at BYU that she met her husband Wesley H. Johnston. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 16, 1959 and just recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary by taking a cruise to Alaska with their family.
Kathy entered into the teaching profession where she taught for many years as a full time teacher and then later as a substitute teacher in both the public schools and LDS seminary. She had many talents and gifts. She had enjoyed acting in high school and college, and painted many oil paintings that she gave to family and friends. She enjoyed the arts very much, in that she always had season tickets to the Capital Theatre, Pioneer Theatre and Hale Theatre. She also enjoyed music, playing the piano, and attending many concerts involving the Utah Symphony.
Kathy enjoyed helping people and provided compassionate service to those in need. This devotion led her and Wes to being missionaries for the LDS church in the Addiction Recovery Program for nine years. She also loved being married and shared that by being on the board of directors for the Marriage Enrichment Program. She also spent many years as a Pink Lady volunteer at Pioneer Valley Hospital. But most of all, Kathy loved being a mother and grandmother. She found much joy from watching her children and grandchildren participate in their many activities.
Kathy is survived by her husband Wes, children Mike (Tammy), David (Jan), Jennifer Bergquist (Stephen) and Jill, grandchildren Colby, Nic, Cassie, Andrew, Taylor, Vanessa, Cory, Jordan, Sammie, and Adam, siblings Paul Hallman (Lila), Nancy Randall (Jim), sister-in-law Janna Smith (Fred), and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by both her parents and one grandson (Dustin).
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 11th at 11:00 am at the Union Fort 5th Ward (6735 South 500 West). Viewings will be held there on Sunday, January 10th from 6:00-8:00 pm, and from 9:30-10:30 am prior to the funeral services. Internment will be at the Redwood Memorial.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Utah Cancer Foundation.
