Lawana Ann Briggs Vlaanderen

Lawana Vlaanderen departed this earth on June 22, 2006, succumbing to cancer at home, surrounded by her loving family. Lawana was born September 22, 1942, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Charles Francis and Edna Grace Browning Briggs. She graduated from Idaho Falls High School and attended B.Y.U. At that time, she met her sweetheart and future husband, Glen Richard Vlaanderen. They were married September 8, 1961, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Their first son, Todd Richard, was born September 25, 1962, in Ogden, Utah. After a move to Idaho Falls, their second son, Roger Glen, was born on February 2, 1965. Darci Delayne, their only daughter, was born on August 17, 1968, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The family lived in San Ramon, California, and Boise, Idaho. Lawana and Glen finally settled in Sandy, Utah, in 1994, to be near their three grandchildren, Kendra, Kearsten, and Cody.
Lawana was uncommonly wise about common things, and had an enthusiasm and a zest for life that shined in all she did. She worked in various fields, but her passion and true calling was her work for Community Education and Literacy Action. Lawana touched and inspired many lives through her teaching and creative skills. She loved to decorate everything; clothing, home interiors, flowers. She was the consummate shopper. Lawana was gracious and poised; a true lady.
Lawana is preceded in death by her parents, brothers lucine and Heber, sister Alta, and grandsons Jeremy and Joshua. She is survived by her husband Glen, sister Donna (Dan) Scarborough, brother Doyle (Valerie) Briggs, her children Todd Vlaanderen (Ed Bennett), Roger Vlaanderen, Darci (Guy) Crossley, and grandchildren Kendra, Kearsten, and Cody Crossley.
The family wishes to express sincere thanks to Dr. Gregory Miller and the staff at Odyssey Hospice.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at the Hidden Valley 3rd Ward, 11755 South Highland Drive (2000 East). Friends and family may gather from 9:00 to 10:45 am at the Church, prior to the services. Interment at Larkin Sunset Gardens. SereniCare, funeral directors.
