Lawrence Owen "Smitty" Smith, age 87 of Salt Lake City, Utah passed away, Saturday, July 16, 2011 in Sandy, Utah. Smitty was born March 30, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Chester J. Smith and Esther Christensen Smith. He attended schools in Salt Lake City before joining the Navy during World War II. He worked on the supply ships USS Argonne and USS Capricornus. On April 5, 1946 he married Joyce B. Tronier in Evinston, Wyoming. She preceded him in death January 15, 1984. He married Dorthy K. Kempton in March of 1985. They were later divorced. He had worked in the tool room at Kennecott in Salt Lake for eighteen years. He then worked for the Utah Highway Department of Transportation as a welder until his retirement. He enjoyed hobbies such as oil painting, playing pool with friends, driving his car and listening to his three son's play music in their band. He is survived by his children; Larry Smith, John (Margarita) Smith, David (Jennifer) Smith Sr., Marty (Cyndy) Smith, Lynn (Katie) Smith and Edward Russell. 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce Smith, and his parents, Chester J. Smith and Esther Christensen Jensen.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 11:00 am in the Elysian Burial Gardens, (1075 East 4580 South). The family will meet with friends on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 from 7 to 9:00 pm at the Serenicare Funeral Home, (12278 S. Lone Peak Parkway, 155 West. Ste 103 , Draper, Utah. "Reinier Building behind 7-11"). Burial will be in the Elysian Burial Gardens.
