Lee J Newman

Lee "J" Newman, beloved husband and father, passed away on July 27, 2008 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Salt Lake City. He was 81.
Born on September 16, 1926 in Gunnison, Utah, to Manley A. and Maggie Peterson Newman, and was married to Bernice Hales on June 7, 1951. The marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple on June 7, 1978.
Lee served eight years in the U.S. Navy in WWII and the Korean War aboard the escort carrier USS Makin Island as a Carpenter's Mate. Honorably discharged, Lee went on to teach carpentry at Utah Technical College (now SLCC) and founded his own construction company, building homes, office buildings, and churches.
An advocate of hard work in all areas of life, including his faith. Lee served in both the LDS Salt Lake and Jordan River temples for 25 years. Lee was an avid hunter, fisherman, and horseman. He was a member of the American Legion for 30 years.
Lee is survived by his wife, Bernice, three sons and three daughters-in-law: Kenneth and Jill, Burke and Karen, John and Cozette, and an "adopted" daughter, Louise Tapaha. He is also survived by one brother and two sisters, Gordon Newman, Renee Curtis, and Marva Marx.
There will be a viewing at the Jordan North Stake Center, 3900 South 4000 West, WVC on July 29 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. There will be a short viewing on July 30 at 9:00 AM. The funeral will begin at 10:00 AM. Graveside services will be at Gunnison Cemetery, on 600 East, north of Highway 89 in Gunnison, Utah later that day at 2:00 PM.
