Leonard Ray Humphreys passed away peacefully at home due to complications of multiple system atrophy. He was gentle and caring, and maintained his sense of humor to the very end.
He was born in Ogden, Utah to Wilford and Pauline Humphreys.
He is survived by his wife, Joen England Humphreys, and three children, Jenefer Curtis (Philip), Allison DiMarco (Robert), and Greg Humphreys. He is also survived by his sister, Jeannie Nalder, and grandchildren, Jesse, Brandon and Sierra DiMarco, and Jeremy and Eleanor Curtis.
He graduated from Ogden High School in 1949. He enlisted in the Navy and served four years as an aerial photographer. He graduated from Weber College in 1956, where he served as student body president. He received his bachelor of science degree in math, chemistry, and physics in 1958 from Univ. of Utah. He did post-graduate studies in engineering at Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute in Albany, New York.
He worked as an engineer at AT&T from 1957 to 1982. From 1982 to 1991, he worked at Sprint International. His career took him to 25 countries, and he helped restore communications in Kuwait just two weeks after the first gulf war.
Ray and Joen were married in 1957. He enjoyed taking his family on road trips and taught them to appreciate the beauty of the national parks and the history of America. During his retirement, he and Joen travelled extensively around the world.
He was a high priest in the LDS church and served in many different positions. He especially enjoyed his many years working in the Jordan River Temple. He was very active in the Weber State Alumni Association, and volunteered in many community events.
The family extends their appreciation to the staff of Community Nursing Services and Dr. David Shprecher for their compassionate care during his long illness.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 15 at 11:00 a.m at the Cottonwood 13th Ward, located at 1830 East 6400 South. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00.
