My companion, my children's mother, Linda Hoskin Shields, passed from this world January 07, 2008, ending an 11-year struggle with breast cancer. Linda fought her disease at every turn: chemo, radiation, surgeries, and drug therapies. Through initial diagnosis, 4 plus yrs of remission, relapse 6 yrs ago and imposition of only a "six months to live" horizon. Spiritually, she never blinked and ultimately only succumbed when her mortal body failed her. She waged this tenacious battle, not for herself, but for her children, Jessica, Kyle, and Travis. A mother's selfless desire, to see them to adulthood, to counsel them on their own first steps in life's journey. In this, I proudly report, she was most successful.
Born April 18, 1954 in Ogden, Linda grew up and thought of as home, Portland, Oregon. She came back to the desert to attend BYU and upon graduation in microbiology; she started a career in laboratory services. 25 years at Primary's Children, rising from bench tech, to manager, to defining "systems re-engineering". Joe and Midge have much to be proud of in their little girl. Linda, her mom, and her four sisters, Kathy, Sheila, Ilene and Joyce retreated annually to Ashland, Ore. for "Shakespeare" and renewal. Her intent was always to return to the Northwest, but she gave away her heart and married me, Mark. She has made her home with me here in Utah for 30 years.
A deeply felt word of thanks to all, for the many kindnesses, love, and support given to us. Throughout her life, Linda embodied grace, dignity and perseverance. She was an influence "For Good" to all whose path she crossed. Her departure leaves a tremendous emptiness. In lieu of flowers Linda has asked that gifts be made to Primary Children's Medical Center, "Patient Quality Fund", administered by Joe Mott.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2008 at the Riverbend Ward, 955 W. 4800 S. in Taylorsville, Utah. There will be a viewing at the Riverbend Ward on Friday, Jan. 11th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and also Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. A private interment will take place at Murray City Cemetery.
