“Gone Fishing”
Our brother, uncle and friend, Lloyd Daryl Carlson, died unexpectedly a few days shy of his 68th birthday. Lloyd was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and lived on Jepson Avenue with his parents and three brothers. He grew up in Sandy, Utah, where two sisters joined the family. He was one of six kids who enjoyed the open space and riding dirt bikes, dune buggies and horses in the undeveloped hills near their Creek Road home until the sun set on a warm summer day.
Lloyd, known as “Carter,” enjoyed watching sports, talking about trucks and politics and going fishing in the nearby canyons. He would often fondly reminisce about his Mom’s cooking and baking–especially the Beef Stew and Applesauce Raisin Cookies. He grew up as an accomplished Boy Scout, playing baseball and hanging out with cousins and brothers at family businesses.
Lloyd lived life on his own terms, was generous to those he cared about and tended to arrive with dog or cat treats when visiting friends or family. He had a sharp wit, was intelligent and a fierce foe in a debate. Lloyd held a special place in his heart for his nephews Pierce, Trey and Chase Kettering. Uncle Lloyd would play catch with them, watch their baseball games, give them recycling projects to make money and he would always drop by on Halloween to see their costumes and give them way too much candy.
He enjoyed chocolate Dunford Donuts, dogs, all animals, monkeys, YouTube videos about monkeys, playing the odds in the lottery, and a good cup of coffee and a cigarette with his coffee shop friends. He was proud of how he helped his Dad around the house, living together for a few years before his Dad passed away.
He attended school at Mount View Elementary, Butler Junior High and Brighton High School. He worked for Mountain Fuel as a meter reader, as a disc jockey at KRSP AM in Taylorsville, Utah, and 13KNPA in Nampa, Idaho. He also worked as a job specialist at A-1 Staffing in Murray, Utah, and for various Salt Lake area companies in the Heating and Air Conditioning business where he recycled materials and refurbished parts. He was a hard worker and was self-employed for the last 20 years. He worked alongside his best friend and coworker, Rod Stoddard. Thank you, Rod, for being such a trusted and thoughtful friend to Lloyd.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Ralph J. Carlson and Catheryn J. Carlson. He is survived by his siblings: Steve (Susie) Carlson, Brent (Tami) Carlson, Rex (Brenda) Carlson, Julie (John) Culverwell and Jana (Dewey) Kettering and many nieces and nephews.
Lloyd’s final resting place will be at Memorial Redwood Cemetery in West Jordan, Utah, with his parents. Some of his ashes will be spread at his favorite fishing hole in Morgan Canyon. A private graveside service for family and friends will be held in the spring.
Lloyd, we hope in heaven that Geo Kitty is sitting on your lap, that you’re throwing a ball for Rossi Dog and there are plenty of good fishing spots with monkeys running around.
