Elk Ridge - Marilyn JoAnn Barrus Russell, 79, died Monday, September 14, 2009, at Mountain View Hospital in Payson of natural causes.
She was born October 21, 1929 in Tooele, Utah, a daughter of Foster J. Barrus and Lois Rebecca Sanders. She enjoyed her childhood days in Tooele and was crowned Miss Tooele in 1949.
She attended the University of Utah and served a mission to Sweden from 1950 to 1952. She was an accomplished pianist and had a profound love of music. During her mission, she performed more than 100 concerts on tour.
She married John P. Russell, a handsome young man from England who she met while serving her mission in Sweden. They were married February 27, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple by President David O. McKay. In 1970, John was killed in a tragic automobile accident in Italy, where he was working, leaving Marilyn with 5 children to raise on her own. She lived nearly 40 years as a widow, always longing to be reunited with her sweetheart.
Following her husband's death, Marilyn and her children relocated from Belgium, where they were living at the time, to Provo, Utah. Marilyn was a devoted mother, grandmother and homemaker, and served faithfully in various church callings, including Relief Society, Young Women's, and as Pianist. She had a gift for discerning people with special needs and quietly reached out to help them whenever possible.
