We lost an extraordinary person and wonderful husband and friend with the passing of Mike the morning of June 1, 2010, taken by pancreatic cancer. Born April 21, 1947 of parents Herbert & Lila Squires in Eugene, OR, he grew up in Mercer Island, WA. He spent summers visiting grandparents in Coeur d'Alene, ID. He had some exciting summer jobs - working on an oil tanker in Alaska and clearing timber in Idaho for the Forest Service. Drafted during the Vietnam War, Mike was fortunate to serve in Heidelberg, Germany. Graduating with a degree in advertising and journalism from the University of Idaho, Mike enjoyed a career in corporate advertising, public relations, and marketing. He was chosen as a guest Rotarian to tour Australia for a few months. Mike had a lifelong mechanical aptitude and loved to work with his hands - repairing, building and creating. He loved nature, whether it was camping in the wilderness, hiking on a mountain trail, walking on a Lake Michigan beach, or simply enjoying the birds in his own backyard. He was an avid nature photographer, always trying to capture that "perfect" sunset picture. Mike had a passion for WWII history, especially in the Pacific. He was kind, compassionate, and considerate. He always had a funny comment ready to make you laugh and feel better. Even during his illness, he had a positive attitude, truly succeeding in his goal to be a good role model. His wife, Karen, of only 5 years, who will miss him dearly, survives him. He is also survived by his sister Tracie Sokol, Mexico City. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 23 at 11:00AM at Mt. Olympus Presbyterian Church, 3280 East 3900 South, Salt Lake City, UT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation: 500 Huntsman Way, Salt Lake City UT 84108 or online at https://www.huntsmancancerfoundation.org
