Phyllis Penman Johnson

Phyllis Reid Penman Johnson died in her home on June 9, 2009. She passed from this life as she lived her life, with faith, dignity, and grace. Phyllis was born on March 18, 1923 in Salt Lake City to Charles Penman and Mary Reid Penman. She was raised in West Weber, Utah. Phyllis married Winslow "Pete" Johnson in Kaysville, Utah on March 2, 1946. They made their home in Salt Lake City where they raised their four children until Pete's death in 1964. Phyllis carried on raising their children with the same tenacity and strong spirit that exemplified her life.
Phyllis operated a beauty shop in her home. She continued styling hair for her devoted "ladies" until her early eighties. Phyllis's life was filled with hard work, friendship, and family. She lived a simple and independent life and was always willing to share all that she had. She would fix chicken soup for a sick friend or a five-course family dinner between permanents, mow her lawn, and shovel her walks - and her neighbors. She was fun and a tease and all her grandchildren loved her as their own dear special friend. She knew a story "about a little girl" or a "little boy" that was just their own, she would cheat at Hearts, make hot chocolate and rice pudding, and bang pans on New Years. Her box of dollars or quarters was always full enough for a treat. Phyllis was quiet and shy and although she wasn't comfortable speaking or praying in public, her faith was the rock of her family and she never went to bed without getting on her knees. Her entire life was evidence of her abiding faith in the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She will continue to be an inspiration to her children and grandchildren.
Phyllis is survived by her children, Sue Ann Alder (Steve), Charlene Barker (Jeff), Gregg (Kris Monsen), and Doug (Camille Neddo); her sister Geraldine Loock (Max), many nieces and nephews. Her eighteen adoring grandchildren are Kelly, Scott, Anne, Mark, Jane, Brooke, Doug, Erinn, Craig, Eric, Richard, Chas, Josh, Lisa, Austin, Connor, and Tanner. She has thirteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a grandson David Pete Johnson, her parents, and a sister Barbara Coffman. We love you Mom. Thank you for your example and love.
