Phyllis LaRue Stay

Phyllis LaRue Birrell Stay, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on April 3, 2011. She was born on January 29, 1934, along with her twin brother Phillip, in Salt Lake City, Utah to James and Nelma Holmes Birrell. She was sealed to her eternal companion Val Gunn Stay in the Salt Lake Temple on February 14, 1955. Together they served as full time missionaries in the Hawaii Mission from 1958 to 1959. Following their mission, Phyllis and Val made their home in the Salt Lake Valley where they raised three children. She loved her family and was happiest when she was surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren. She was proud of her and Val's missionary service, as well as the service of both her sons and 3 of her grandchildren.
Phyllis is survived by her husband Val, three children - Kevin (Michelle) Stay, Layton, UT; Cynthia (Greg) Jensen, Houston, TX; and Daniel Stay, Melbourne, Australia; six grandchildren - Melissa, Joseph, Rachel and Erin Jensen and Nikolas and Catherine Stay; four brothers, Joseph, David, Lynn and Larry Birrell, and two sisters, Jean Yeiter, and Evelyn Pickering. She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandson Tyler Jensen, her twin brother Phillip, and brothers: James, Robert, John, Donald and Leon; and sisters: Lorraine, Mary and Dorothy.
A viewing for family and friends will take place on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Sun Hills Ward, 3290 North 1050 East in Layton, Utah. Memorial Services will immediately follow at 11:00 am. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
Phyllis had a strong love of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and missionary work. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the LDS General Mission fund. The family wishes to express gratitude to Intermountain Homecare Hospice for their loving care and service during the final weeks of Phyllis' life.
